Women's soccer reaches milestone with 2-2 start
September 8, 2009
The Mercyhurst College women’s soccer team has started off the season 2-2 and has reached some milestones in their history in the process.
With their recent 1-0 victory over cross-town rivals Gannon University on Wednesday, Sept. 2, the women’s soccer team earned their 300th program victory, bringing their program record to 300-118.
Senior Karla Voght scored the only goal of the contest.
The Lakers continued their undefeated series record over the Golden Knights, beating them 22 times in 26 matches. The other four games ended in ties.
Later in the week, they added one more victorious match, beating Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania 3-1 on Sunday, Sept. 6 at home.
With the first two of what the team expects to be many Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference wins this season, the year looks good for the Lakers, and it’s not just the experienced players contributing to the success.
“It’s certainly a rebuilding year with a lot of new faces both on the men’s and women’s teams. We need to find a new chemistry as quickly as possible,” head coach Keith Cammidge said.
While talented senior Taylor Hilinski became only the eighth Mercyhurst footballer to score 30 career goals at Lock Haven, she won’t be the only player fans watch this season.
Freshman Danielle Braun scored her first career goal for the Lakers her first time in uniform against Kutztown in the season opener, and has continued to contribute to the team success with goals and assists.
No one has scored a goal in their first career game since Sarah Powell and Lisa Melander did so in the 2005 season opener.
The Lakers hope that their success continues as they prepare to face off against Clarion University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Sept. 8. It will be the third in seven consecutive PSAC games for the Lakers.
