Five softball players earn PSAC honors
May 11, 2011
The Mercyhurst softball team ended the season almost a month ago in a disappointing PSAC tournament loss to Shippensburg.
Although the season ended earlier then the team expected, a few players ended the year with awards.
Five Lakers earned All-PSAC honors, two made All-PSAC West first team and the other three made second team all-PSAC West.
Junior transfer Samantha Eimers and senior Kara Gorgos earned first-team honors. Eimers, who transferred from Mercyhurst North East, led the PSAC in total bases, runs scored and slugging percentage, and finished top-three in six other offensive categories in her first year at Mercyhurst.
Gorgos was a defensive star for the Lakers in centerfield, registering a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Gorgos was also excellent on the bases, stealing nine bases, which was second best on the team.
Senior Michelle Schmitz, junior Emily Redig and freshman Courtney Smith made the PSAC West second-team.
Schmitz earned her second-straight PSAC second-team honor after leading the team with 12 doubles and a solid .265 batting average.
Redig earned an award for the second straight year following another stand-out season. She ranked second on the team in slugging percentage, runs scored, total bases, hits and home runs.
Smith is the only underclassman to earn PSAC honors. She was second on the team in batting average and finished in the top three in seven other categories.
