Hopes for the new year

2020 is finally over. I cannot explain how happy people were when the clock struck midnight on Dec. 31, 2020 and we entered the first day of a new year.

Last year was arguably the worst year the world has seen for a long time. Now, it is a new year and a new start for most people.

Many hoped the world would magically get better this year since last year seemed to hold a plethora of bad events. However, based off of the first month, this year is not off to a great start.

First, on Jan. 6, the Capitol was attacked. Then on Jan. 13, Donald Trump became the only president to be impeached twice. On Jan. 20, Joe Biden was inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States. And finally, on Jan. 27, the stock market witnessed some troubles. A weird coincidence about all these events is that they all occurred on Wednesdays, so many people are wondering what will happen next Wednesday.

With the first month of 2021 behind us, it is evident that something needs to change this year. I think the country needs to be unified in some sense.

I do not know how to do that quite yet or to what extent the unification needs to be, but this constant divide between liberals and conservatives is not benefiting anyone or the country.

If we want to see a change this year, both parties have to compromise on some of the issues that are important for them.

On Feb. 2, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and predicted that there would be six more weeks of winter.

Personally, I was really hoping for an early summer as I feel everyone’s mood is just better in the summertime when we can be outside more, and the sun is constantly shining.

I hope that this year gives people the strength to carry on with whatever life throws at them because 2020 proved that it is so easy to lose motivation and not try as hard.

We have to be able to move past that and get ourselves back on track and accomplish everything we wanted to achieve in our lifetime.

Another thing I wish for this year is that there are fewer traumatic events that take place because for the past few years they have become so frequent it just seems like everyday life and we forget that there was a simpler time where not as many terrible events took place.

My hopes for 2021 are unrealistic because of all the horrible events that take place every day in the world, but a girl can dream.
