Video game review: My Town

Pros: Original Facebook game, fun to play, fun to look at

Cons: Can only do so much before the game limits your playing space

4 out of 5 stars

My Town is a great game if you like Sim City but don’t have the money to buy it.

My Town can be found on Facebook and is made by Broken Bulb. It is a game where you build your town from something that begins as a small stretch of road with a couple houses lined up on it all the way up to a sprawling metropolis.

How you get from the tiny three-house stretch of road to a huge city is with money and experience points. Every building has a timer that represents when players can collect money and experience points, and when time is up the building will turn green. Players then hover their mouse over the building and click on it and then get experience points and money to continue building your town.

This game is fairly original compared to a lot of other games I have seen of Facebook. It takes the idea of FarmVille and then expands it so it is not so “cute.” Even when players are not doing anything with the game, it is fun visually. If you have other friends who play this (and I highly suggest that you get friends to play it), it could become a competition as to whose city is cooler. Even without the social aspects, it is fun to just look over your city and attempt to make it look better.

Unfortunately, there is a limited amount of space you can use to develop your city. In order to get more space, you have to enlist friends into the game. If you have many friends who play this, then this does not concern you. However, if you don’t know a lot of people who are interested in games, then the space limits could become annoying. Once a player runs out of space, they can’t build any more buildings. In short, they are kind of stuck.

Overall, I feel that Facebook’s My Town is a fun game that seems to be a good new design to a very stagnant list of games on Facebook. It is fun to play and, even when you are not really playing it, it is fun to look at. However, if you don’t have a lot of friends who play you can run out of space quickly and have nowhere else to expand. I give this game four out of five stars.
