Freshman guide to the Recreation Center
August 9, 2009
Crash diet just isn’t doing it for you? Worried that the Freshman Fifteen will get you? Then do I have something for you: The Mercyhurst College Recreation Center!
Known popularly as “the Rec,” this state-of-the-art facility will keep those unwanted pounds off you and your new crush’s eyes on you.
“How can the Rec help me?” you say? In about 14,000 ways, give or take 13,964. First off, there are the training areas.
Sporting all kinds of aerobic machines (treadmills, ellipticals, cycles, etc.), weight training circuits, free weight equipment, and a carpeted stretching area, the main floor will get you in the best shape of your life in no time.
And if that won’t get you in the gym, while exercising on the aerobic machines, you can watch one of four TV’s right in front of you. Lose weight and watch TV? Sign me up!
Need some serious lifting? Come to the back room, where you’ll find dumbbells so heavy, I doubt they’ve been lifted off the rack. There are also benches, squat racks, and other equipment to round out the room.
Three recreational rooms round out the Rec. The first is an aerobics room where you can dance if you want to, you can leave your friends behind, cause your friends don’t dance and if they don’t dance, well, they’re no friends of mine…
The second is somewhat of a martial arts room, complete with a fully-cushioned floor and a full-body punching bag.
The last room is the fabled spinning room that has a classroom of stationary bikes prepared to own any and all who enter.
Fitness classes of all types and difficulty levels also take place in these rooms, ranging from yoga to self defense to boxing. Classes start September 7, so hurry up and check them out.
But wait, there’s more! In addition to all these ridiculous products to get you ripped and toned, there’s an indoor multipurpose court too. You can play basketball and volleyball on this court.
All you need to experience the wonders of the Rec is one easy payment of your Mercyhurst ID card and an extra pair of shoes. Change into your workout clothes and shoes in the carpeted changing area, and let your self-transformation begin.
Hours for the Rec are listed on its website on Lakernet and outside the doors of the Rec itself.
