"Raw Edges X" will premiere student choreography works from the Mercyhurst College Dance Department this Saturday and Sunday at the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center.

As the tenth show in an annual tradition of choreography showings, "Raw Edges X" will contain many different works created by the various student choreographers from choreography II and III classes.

Mercyhurst dance professor Mark Santillano is the instructor of the choreography II class, and Director Tauna Hunter is the instructor of the choreography III class.

Both Santillano and Hunter helped mentor the choreography students throughout the creation process.

Santillano said that the performance is "…in celebration of the 10-year milestone," and that "the annual dance concert will feature a special video retrospective of past performances."

"With such a wide variety, Raw Edges is perfect for dance aficionados and novices alike. There’s something for everyone," Santillano said.

Two different shows with completely different collections of dance pieces will be shown. One show will be presented at the Saturday matinee performance, and the other at the Saturday night and Sunday performances. The Saturday matinee show will also be performed on Friday Feb. 8 for a specially invited audience.

With each piece having been created by a different student choreographer, "Raw Edges X" is a dance concert that promises variety. Several different dance idioms will be represented, including contemporary, modern, jazz and classical ballet.

The pieces explore a variety of themes, such as the wonders of children’s imaginations, nightmares, mental illness, inheriting societal problems caused by older generations and the need for hope. During each show’s intermission, some of the student choreographers will come out to talk about their works and have a question-and-answer session with the audience.

Sophomore Liz Galloway, one of the student choreographers said, "We have some truly amazing pieces being shown this year. All the choreographers have worked very hard and there are some quite original pieces featured in the concert. This is going to be a show worth seeing."

Fellow sophomore choreographers Jen Kitchens and Michelle Conroy echo these sentiments.

"The show only costs students one dollar. There are two different shows, and they are both equally impressive," Kitchens said.

"The ‘Raw Edges’ choreographers have put forth a lot of hard work, and it is going to be a great show; it would be a shame for anyone to miss it," Michelle Conroy added.

With such a mix of presentations, "Raw Edges" is sure to be a unique show.

It will take place in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the PAC and are only $1 for Mercyhurst students.
