Arts & Entertainment 'Hurst screams for 'ATTENTION'
By Nicole Cerilli A&E editor SoMar Dance Works celebrates its tenth season with a new program titled “A Desperate Cry for ATTENTION.” As the title promises, the program will explore the various ways people go about getting noticed through two Erie premiers and nine world premiers. “The need for attention is universal, and it manifests itself in a myriad of ways,” said co-artistic director Mark Santillano. “Temper tantrums, flashy sports cars, low-cut dresses and even suicide attempts are some examples of how people cry out for attention.” Under the direction of Mercyhurst College dance professors Solveig and Mark Santillano, SoMar Dance Works now hosts a roster of eight dancers and is in residence at Mercyhurst College. SoMar was originally a duet company. Expanding the roster has allows a full-evening concert. This year, six Mercyhurst dance majors are company members. Seniors Alyssa Marquez, Dara Swisher, Sarah Auge and Noelle Lelakus are in their second year with the. Junior Nora Beckenstein and sophomore Jennifer Mihu are new to SoMar this year. Mihu said working with the company was an honor. “Rehearsals are always filled with hard work but lots of laughter as well,” she said. “SoMar definitely lives up to their motto, ‘It wouldn’t be SoMar unless we're standing on our heads.’” Mercyhurst jazz instructor and Director of Erie Bayfront Dance Nathanial Johnson will also be featured in a piece titled “Crouching Tutu, Hidden Drag Queen.” Regarding this piece, Mark Santillano said, “You have to see it to believe it.” The concert showcases the choreographic talents of Solveig and Mark Santillano. Both are known for their artistry, physicality, wit and creativity. While a majority of the program is lighthearted, there is one piece that carries a more-serious tone. It addresses the epidemic of school shootings, in response to current events. Mark Santillano explained he heard about the most recent shooting incident at Northern Illinois University on his drive home after a rehearsal for the piece. “It’s a case of life-imitating-art-imitating-life,” he said. “It’s so timely and yet so very, very sad.” Accompanying the choreography is eclectic music, including works by David Bowie, the Gipsy Kings, Tom Waits and minimalist composer John Adams. In addition, special guest artist and flutist Anna Meyer will again join SoMar. She will perform a piece by Astor Piazzolla. “A Desperate Cry for ATTENTION!” will be presented on Saturday, March 8 at 8 p.m. at the Central High School Auditorium located at 3325 Cherry Street, Erie. Ticket prices range from $5 to $15, and they will be available at the door. More information about SoMar Dance Works is available at www.freewebs.com/somardanceworks.
