Features 'Rock the Catwalk'
By Sandy Watro Staff writer The Fashion Merchandising Club will be the host of a fashion show to benefit the Mercy Center for Women in Erie. The show is planned to take place on April 11 in the Taylor Little Theater at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the cost of $1 per student and $2 per non-student. Tickets will be sold April 7 to April 11 in the student union from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Mercy Care Center is a local organization that was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1994. The Care Center functions as long-term transitional housing for homeless women and mothers. The building itself is a former convent that has 13 rooms and can house up to 27 residents at a time. Besides offering a safe and welcoming environment, the shelter also holds a variety of weekly seminars. These workshops and classes are suited to benefit residents emotionally, spiritually and mentally. The show, titled Rock the Runway, was inspired and is focused on a variety of notable musicians that were and still are prevalent in the 20th and 21st centuries. The viewer will see how certain musicians’ signature looks are reinterpreted through a modern and contemporary fashion lens. Individual male artists that are featured in the show include Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney, Jimi Hendrix and Snoop Dogg. Individual female-artist looks range from Dolly Parton to Gwen Stefani. The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Spice Girls and New Kids on the Block are a few of the groups of artists that will be featured in the show. Junior Carly Emery, secretary of the Fashion Merchandising Club, is excited about the up-coming show. "This show is going to be a really good time," Emery said. "I encourage all to come and check out the fun ways we interpreted musical icons throughout history." Styles and looks for the show will be donated from Buckle, Urban Behavior and JC Penney. Since the show has a vintage flair, most of the looks will be hand selected from thrift stores or provided by members of the club. The inspired looks will be modeled by Mercyhurst students. Students interested in helping a good cause and showing off some ridiculous good looks, contact Caroline Boyce at cboyce31@mercyhurst.edu. Junior Boyce is heading up the show. "Everyone who attends will love to see the various fashion music icons we have included in the show," she said. "Many local stores have been generous and let us borrow clothes for the show, which have made it possible to put it together. It will be an event that everyone will enjoy and definetely be worth attending."
