Features Fashion hits and misses at CMT awards
By Sandy Watro Staff writer Country Music Television hosted its annual music awards ceremony last week in Nashville. The events roster of guests was surprisingly diverse. A number of the guests included recent reality television stars, as well as those that have been founded by the genre of country music, including Paula Abdul, Bucky Covington, Diana DeGarmo, Carrie Underwood and Trace Adkins. The event was hosted by Billy Ray Cyrus and his daughter Miley. Miley wore a low-cut, white chiffon dress that was imprinted with red, mosaic-like designs. She later donned an unpredictably low-cut dress in her performance with Keith Urban. Urban, who arrived with Nicole Kidman, wore a refreshingly unique heather grey vest and pants. Kidman’s ruby red gown provided an aesthetically pleasing contrast with the light grey shade. A number of different female guests also selected grey-shaded attire. LeAnn Rimes looked svelte in a unique 1920s-inspired number by Julia Clancey. Diana DeGarmo also wore the shade in a darker hue. DeGarmo’s silk, tunic-style dress featured a large geometric design made of different sized sequins and studs. Jewel tones of turquoise, royal purple and magenta were also seen on the red carpet. Carrie Underwood, a two-time nominee, wore dark purple. Underwood seems to favor the style of one-shoulder, A-line dresses with flounced hems, as she is often seen wearing it down the red carpet. Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland spiced up the jewel tone category, wearing a form-fitting, bright teal dress. Nettles wore a form-fitting bright teal dress. The dress was intricately and gathered, creating a stunning look on the simple silhouette. Senior Marissa Davitt stated that she liked Nettles dress. "The turquoise color and draping of the gown looked great together," she said. Taylor Swift was another winner, taking home a coveted Buckle Award. Swift sported a plum number designed by Roberto Cavalli. The garment’s elegant draping at the hemline made the dress look sophisticated and fresh. Snoop Dogg also made an appearance at the awards. The Dogg donned an all-black cowboy-inspired outfit complete with a matching hat and, of course, black sunglasses. Snoop made an announcement at the event that his new song, titled "The Medicine," was inspired by Johnny Cash. Overall, the awards hosted celebrity guests that were unexpectedly diverse in both age and musical genre. One can only hope that this exciting fusion of genres can continue to be created in the fashion and music industries.
