Clinton: A defining moment

In the aftermath of the Hillary visit, I found myself in deep contemplation.

I felt Hillary’s visit, just as Erie news proclaimed, was a historic event.

The world is in a very fragile state right now and America’s new leader will no doubt have a great amount of influence on the lives of Americans and people around the world for generations to come.

It is this true weight of importance that I see in her visit. I look at Hillary’s visit as a defining moment for Mercyhurst College and, in that defining moment, I find myself feeling we failed.

Mercyhurst College is a liberal arts community that dedicates itself to critical thought, yet when given the opportunity to question a woman who has for years been a part of a broken government and seeks to soon run it, we question nothing.

Instead of a showing by the educated community that Americans are aware of the current state of affairs and hold those in the government responsible for their actions, we met Hillary with banners that proclaimed, “Mercyhurst for Hillary,” a blatant contradiction to our official stance on politics, and mindless cheering as she paused for socially scripted response.

Faculty and the student body, including myself, are equally guilty for this abominable performance when it mattered most.

I felt it necessary to share this observation so we all can work to rectify our behavior. If given a chance to redeem ourselves we will not fail again.
