The past few weeks at Mercyhurst College have been what some would say, one of the rockiest times for a Catholic institution. Erie Diocesan Bishop Donald Trautman says he will no longer attend the college’s 2008 graduation in protest of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s visit.

Mercyhurst College admissions department is under new leadership. Christopher Coons, new head of the admissions department, said he is excited to fill the position.

Decorated T-shirts representing violence directly and indirectly experienced by members of Mercyhurst College were stolen from Garvey Park this past weekend.

The prize for seniors getting nominated for one of Mercyhurst College's four top awards was to get their academic information posted on the Internet.

The Leadership Certification Program (LCP) gives Mercyhurst College undergraduate students the opportunity to develop their personal and professional leadership potential while learning specific skills.

New MSG positions are filled after two series of secret-ballot elections. The last portion of Monday’s Mercyhurst Student Government (MSG) meeting was spent voting on the positions of Student Activities Council Chair, Public Relations Coordinator and MSG Events Coordinator.

Mercyhurst gets 'direct' with lending

Mercyhurst College will launch a program next year that will make sure students aren’t left a-loan. Mercyhurst is currently making the transition to the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (FDL), which will take full effect beginning in the 2008-09 academic year.

 

Mercyhurst tuition crosses $30,000 mark

Students will need to delve deeper into their pockets to pay for next year’s tuition. A hike of 6 percent will bump the current main campus resident price tag of $29,691 to $31,482.

Erie Catholic Bishop Donald Trautman will not attend Mercyhurst College’s graduation ceremony this year in protest over Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s visit to campus on April 1.

 

School looks at political policies

Roughly a week after Mercyhurst College President Dr. Thomas Gamble stated that he will look into a policy regarding the presence of political candidates on campus, the college announced it would be the venue for Sen. Hillary Clinton for her “Solutions for the Pennsylvania Economy” address Tuesday evening.

The Teaching Excellence Award is given each year to a professor for being inspirational, compelling or simply excellent. The Office of Academic Affairs is asking students to give their "opinion and nominate the faculty member who [they] feel has had a transformative effect on his or her students," says the award Web site.

Profiling a campus killer

Experts say no foolproof way to pick a shooter

No one could have predicted that on Feb. 14, 2008, 27-year-old Steven Kazmierczak would walk onto the Northern Illinois University campus and shoot dead five students. Media have said Kazmierczak forgot to take his medication. Other reports say Kazmierczak just snapped. For world-renowned criminal profiler Brent Turvey, it’s too early to tell the motive behind Kazmierczak’s killings.

President announces $32M expansion

More buildings, more faculty and more students is the drive behind Mercyhurst College’s new $32 million expansion plan. It will also mean more debt. Dr. Thomas Gamble, the college’s president, announced Monday the school’s strategic initiative for the next five years.

 

3-part safety series: Arming police & safety

School has no plans to arm officers

Former Northern Illinois University graduate student Steven Kazmierczak shot dead five students in less than two minutes on Feb. 14 in the university’s Cole Hall. It took campus police under 30 seconds to respond. If an incident such as a shooter were to occur on the Mercyhurst College campus, the school’s police and safety officers would have nothing to protect themselves with since they do not carry firearms, said Rodger Gregorich, Mercyhurst’s police and safety director.

As the inspiration behind the 2005 film, "Coach Carter," famed high school basketball coach Ken Carter brought his message of accountability, integrity, teamwork and leadership to Mercyhurst College on Monday night.

Three-part series explores safety concerns at Mercyhurst College

Mercyhurst College students have no need to worry about campus safety say Gerry Tobin and Laura Zirkle, the college’s vice president and assistant vice president for student life. The two residence life chiefs said Mercyhurst has an emergency plan ready for any disaster that could occur on campus, such as that which struck Northern Illinois University on Feb. 14 when former graduate student Steven P. Kazmierczak shot 22 people, killing five, and then fatally shot himself.

 

MSG votes to decrease executive scholarships

Mercyhurst College Student Government voted Monday to decrease executive board member stipends, while increasing the overall total line item amount. The vote comes after MSG opted to add the MSG event coordinator and the public relations coordinator positions to the executive board.

 

Fashion for 'Hurst, books for Erie students

The runway is lighting Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m. in the Mercy Heritage Hall for a premiere fashion show, hosted by Kappa Delta Pi to help support local students in their quest for success.

ROTC cadets prepare for Airborne slots

The Mercyhurst Cadets of the Gannon ROTC Battalion conducted training for their first “Airborne Week” of the 2007-08 school year. In preparation for Airborne school, the Mercyhurst Cadets are competing against each other to obtain Airborne slots for the 3-week school held in Fort Benning, Ga.

REC unsettled by maintenance concern

Students in the Mercyhurst College REC smelled more than just body odor Tuesday afternoon. Director of the Mercyhurst Athletic Center Tom Herman said he smelled natural gas in the REC and called maintenance around 3:45 p.m.

Erie police are currently investigating the assault of a Mercyhurst College senior that occurred Saturday night in the 700 block of East 38th Street.


MSG votes to change constitution

Student will see a change in the Mercyhurst College Student Government, as the body voted to slash the number of representatives on the government and increase the number of executive board positions.

MSG votes in new SAC programmer despite opposition

In a 24-8 vote with three abstentions, the Mercyhurst College Student Government voted senior Marty Wallenhorst into the position of Student Activities Council programmer. The vote, however, comes amid some controversy from the MSG body.
