MSG votes in new SAC programmer despite opposition

From staff reports

In a 24-8 vote with three abstentions, the Mercyhurst College Student Government voted senior Marty Wallenhorst into the position of Student Activities Council programmer.

The vote, however, comes amid some controversy from the MSG body.

MSG representative junior Zach Pekor said he does not fully agree with the body’s vote and said he thought someone younger would be best for the position.

“I don’t know how much he will be able to accomplish in his short amount of time,” he said.

Sophomore MSG representative Allie Miniri presented a petition from members of the Student Activities Council that stated their disapproval of Wallenhorst into the position.

“(He) has several outstanding qualities against him,” she said. “We are asking the body of MSG to disapprove Marty Wallenhorst into the programmer position.”

Junior MSG representative Heather Schwager said the petition is not a unified decision by the activities council.

MSG Treasurer junior Christina Coovert said the decision was made based on the candidates' qualifications.

“We’re all professionals,” she said. “When it comes down to it, it was based on the qualifications and we went in with an open mind.”

Mercyhurst College Student Activities Council Chair senior Kelly Cofrancisco said the MSG Executive Board took time in making the decision.

“We had a hell of a weekend discussing (the position),” she said at Monday’s meeting.

Sophomore MSG representative Chris Ulrich said he is against the body’s vote.

“Marty hasn’t been to a single event this year,” he said. “(It) was kept under wraps (on who they chose) until now.”

Some members of the MSG body, however, stand by the decision to appoint Wallenhorst to the position.

Freshman MSG representative Adam Kostik said Wallenhorst is a good choice for the position.

“Marty has the potential to be all that he can be,” he said. “He is an amazing leader and knows how to get the job done.”

Senior MSG representative Chris Davis said he supports Wallenhorst.

“He truly showed he was one of the best qualified candidates,” he said. “It’s not about the volunteer service you put in; it’s about a job.”

Cofrancisco said the MSG Executive Board received applications for the programmer position from sophomore Dinorah Sanchez, junior Casey O’Brien, Ulrich, and Wallenhorst.

She said the application process for the position includes an essay, two short answer questions, the creation of a sample program, and an interview.

The decision to recommend Wallenhorst to the student government body for a vote comes from the MSG executive board, according to MSG Secretary sophomore Jacquelynne Brown.

Brown said she, Coovert, and Cofrancisco unanimously recommended Wallenhorst as the best candidate for the position, and needed a body vote to approve him officially.

Brown said MSG President senior Marissa Starin and MSG Vice President junior Mihailo Jovanovic abstained from the decision.

Starin said she abstained since she was not present at any interviews for the candidates and could not make a fair decision.

Jovanovic is out of the country and not available for comment.

Wallenhorst said he accepts the position and is ready to undertake his duties.

“I appreciate being selected for the position despite controversy,” he said. “I look forward to working with the committee.”
