'Hurst's first literacy fair inspires children

Children of Erie’s inner city had the opportunity to escape into a world of books last week in the Mercyhurst College Carolyn Hermann Student Union.

Students from Dr. Timothy Frawley’s children’s literature class read books and designed activities for underprivileged children in Erie on Jan. 30
at the college’s first Literacy Fair.

AmeriCorps VISTA member Colin Hurley said the event went very smoothly, especially with the children coming to the event right after school.

"For quite a few of the youngsters, it would their first time at the college and you could see the sparkle of curiosity in their eyes," said Hurley.

Students brainstormed ideas to connect with the community partners of Erie by making reading come alive.

Sr. Michele Schroeck, Mercyhurst College Director of Service Learning said it was great to see the children’s literature class participate.

"Connecting it with a class improved the quality of activities and created a common experience from which the class will have further discussion," said Schroeck.

After each child completed an activity, a sticker was given to them to put on their passport.

"The idea was for the child to have an individualized passport that could take them to any of the reading sessions," said Hurley.

Freshman Kelly Lysowski said the event went well and the children enjoyed the different stories.

Freshman Meghan Warner agreed.

"The event was a huge success and it worked out really well," she said.

Warner would like to see the event continue in the future. She said it’s great for the children to come into the community.

Nine-year old Yasmine Mickel attended the event and was very happy she came.

"I like the activities," said Mickel. "We got to color and make stuff and I was very excited about that."

Frawley said the children were engaged.

"They are making connections with the story and that’s what we wanted," he said. "It’s great to see them interested with the book."

After the event, each child received a book to take home.

"Michele Garvey took the initiative to order books through a scholastic book order," said Hurley. "They were a small piece of the literacy fair for the children to take home with them."
