New lounges planned for apartment buildings

Mercyhurst Student Government voted to approve a proposal to create new lounges in select apartment buildings on Briggs and Lewis Avenue.

If approved by the college, three lounges in buildings located on Briggs and Lewis Ave., will be equipped with a ping pong table or foosball table, board games and a radio.

The lounges will be monitored by members of the MSG’s Residence Life Committee.

The proposal to revitalize the lounges in the basements of upperclassman apartments was first presented on Jan. 14 to the MSG body by the Residence Life Committee Chair sophomore Andrew Schuler.

According to the proposal, the project is intended to provide recreational opportunities for students, a new place to relax and create a greater sense of unity among students within apartment buildings.

MSG Treasurer junior Christina Coovert said that the project will directly benefit the lives of students.

"The proposal has great potential to really make a difference in the student apartments on campus," said Coovert.

If the proposal is successful, MSG plans on preparing a formal proposal to present to ResLife and the administration in order to make the new lounges available to all apartments on campus.

Senior representative on the Residence Life Committee Abigail McDonald agrees with Coovert.

"We are hoping that students will really embrace the lounges," said McDonald.
