News REC unsettled by maintenance concern
By Ashley Pastor Staff writer Students in the Mercyhurst College REC smelled more than just body odor Tuesday afternoon. Director of the Mercyhurst Athletic Center Tom Herman said he smelled natural gas in the REC and called maintenance around 3:45 p.m. "I left my office to go across campus, and when I walked out and then came back and the smell of gas was sheesh," said Herman. Maintenance and police and safety were called to the scene around 4 p.m. Officers who responded said they first thought it was a gas leak of some sort. "I noticed that the smell was the strongest at the rear entrance of the gym," said Herman. Maintenance crews were on the scene for 45 minutes looking for the source. A National Fuel worker on the scene said the problem was with a heater in the REC. Mercyhurst College Assistant Vice President of Student Life and Director of Residence Life Laura Zirkle said the problem was found and the scene cleared by National Fuel. "The exhaust fan (of a heater) in the gym was blowing the exhaust back into the building," said Zirkle. The REC was not evacuated or closed because of the incident. No injuries were reported.
