'Hurst to host Clinton rally

From staff reports

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) will make a stop at Mercyhurst Tuesday evening in the college's athletic center.

She will speak on "Solutions for the Pennsylvania Economy."

The event is on a first come, first served basis.

The Mercyhurst Athletic Center (MAC) will open to the public at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday in anticipation of a large crowd for Clinton’s 7:30 p.m. speech. The MAC is estimated to seat around 2,500.

Mercyhurst maintains a policy of neither supporting nor opposing candidates, but recognizes the educational importance of political discussion.

At the request of Mercyhurst Student Government (MSG), Mercyhurst College President Dr. Thomas Gamble extended an invitation to all presidential candidates including Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) several months ago.

Gamble was informed Sunday that Clinton had accepted the invitation and would be addressing both the Mercyhurst College and Erie communities.

"As a Catholic college, Mercyhurst holds itself true to the mission of educating its students in an environment where faith and reason flourish together," Gamble said.

"We have an obligation to provide a faithful presentation of the teachings of the Church and also to support reason by providing a full range of educational opportunities to our students. It is in the spirit of encouraging dialogue on issues important to the future of the United States and its citizens, whose welfare should be a matter of concern to all of us, that we have chosen to permit this visit."
