Decorated T-shirts representing violence directly and indirectly experienced by members of Mercyhurst College were stolen from Garvey Park this past weekend.

Mercyhurst College Police and Safety Chief Ken Sidun said the department is investigating the theft. He said there are no suspects.

The Clothesline Project (CLP) was one event organized by Amnesty International to represent April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention Month.

April 13-19 was National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and Amnesty International organized a two-day outdoor festival to raise awareness about the prevalence of violence against women.

The CLP invited female victims or those who know female victims of abuse, sexual violence or murder to design T-shirts honoring the woman’s story. Each T-shirt color represented a different act of violence against women and children.

“The T-shirts are tangible reminders of the stories that go ignored, unspoken or unheard every year,” Dr. Marnie Sullivan said, visiting assistant professor of English.

The Erie City Mission donated many T-shirts and Sullivan purchased additional shirts and supplies with her own money to fund the project.

Students came together Friday evening to design the shirts that hung in Garvey Park, along with educational and advocacy materials.

Sullivan said during that night, more than 12 T-shirts were stolen.

Sidun encourages anyone with information on the crime submit an anonymous tip to police and safety in the lower level of McAuley or by calling (814) 824-2304.

Sullivan said the CLP is a “national, nonviolent, non-profit movement.” She encourages students to visit their Web site at www.clothesline.org.
