News Cigarette causes fire in Wayne 300
From staff reports Students should watch where they toss their butts. Cigarette butts, that is. A small fire engulfed a plastic cable cover outside Wayne 300 Monday morning. Mercyhurst College Police and Safety responded to a call shortly after 10 a.m. from the building’s resident assistant who said she could smell smoke, according to Ken Sidun, the college’s police chief. “(Officers) discovered that the bark on the mulch was smoldering and the plastic cable cover caught on fire,” he said. Erie Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. No flames were present and no injuries were reported. “Students should be careful when smoking around the dry mulch,” Sidun said.
