News College appoints new head of admissions
By Julie Hranicia Staff writer Mercyhurst College admissions department is under new leadership. Christopher Coons, new head of the admissions department, said he is excited to fill the position. Coons, a native New Yorker, has plenty of experience working with students as an admissions counselor. He comes to Mercyhurst from West Virginia Wesleyan College, where he worked as the director of admissions for two years. He has worked in the admissions department at Alfred University, where he was an associate director of admissions and a coordinator of admissions marketing. At West Virginia Wesleyan, Coons was hired as an admissions counselor directly out of college. He advanced to assistant director and then associate director before moving to Alfred. The friendly and engaging community at Mercyhurst was a deciding factor in Coons choice to join the college’s staff. He said he and his wife wanted a college that makes them feel comfortable and shared their beliefs of civic engagement, service learning and student advocacy. Coons said the cultural opportunities that Erie provides also influenced his wife’s approval of the area. “I want to take advantage of the opportunities that Mercyhurst and Erie provide by becoming involved in campus activities through staff and community events,” Coons said. He is focused on maintaining the high level of excellence
“I want to make sure that we are working together as a team and that we epitomize the values of teamwork, friendship and fellowship,” he said. Coons is focused on continuing to evaluate the strategic plan of the college. “I want to make sure that we are continuing to recruit students who fit the mission statement and exhibit characteristics that Mercyhurst values, such as those that are true to alumni of the school,” he said. “By individualizing the admissions process for each student, I want to customize the message that the school is sending out.” Student advocacy is another important concern for Coons, he said. He said he has never worked at a school larger than Mercyhurst, but believes that it is highly important for students to form great relationships with faculty and staff members. Sophomore and Vice-President of the Ambassador club, Dinorah Sanchez said she is excited about Coons’ ideas as well. “Mr. Coons has the extensive experience required to be at the helm of admissions for Mercyhurst,” she said. “I have great expectations for him, and look forward to working with him and the rest of the admissions department through the Ambassador club.” Sophomore Maria Rambuski agrees. “I think Mr. Coons has a great idea about how to most benefit students on campus and how to work with prospective students to make the admissions process better for them,” she said. With students in mind, Coons said he is excited about his job and is looking forward to his experience at Mercyhurst. “I knew this was a great community with great dynamics,” he said. “I felt as soon as I stepped on the campus that this was the place where I wanted to work.”
