Women's lacrosse picks up
three victories
By Samantha Sellinger Staff writer The Mercyhurst College women’s lacrosse team won its first three games over spring break, giving them a 3-0, undefeated season. Due to some great goal scoring the Lakers won their first game this season against Lees-McRae College with an impressive score of 25-5. This was the first time they won their season opener since 2005 and the team broke the school record for goals in a game in a season-opener. “This team is such an impressive and talented group of lacrosse players,” said sophomore attacker, Kate Smith. “We are determined to be victorious.” Only 13 seconds into the game Mercyhurst’s Jessie Horeth scored the first goal and set the tone for the game. While Lees-McRae did take a short lead in the beginning of the game, it was Mercyhurst who led at halftime 12-2. They were able to hold it together and outshot Lees-McRae for the win. All-American candidate, Breanna Haggerty, played a strong game with six goals and two assists. Page Christensen also scored six goals, while Horeth had three goals and two assists, and Kristen Toomey added two goals and three assists. Celeste Shefferly, Ashley Dulaney, Kimberly Masterton, and Maria Rosettie all scored their first career goals. In the team’s second match this season, the girls took an early lead against Rollins College when Haggerty scored four consecutive goals putting Mercyhurst ahead 5-0. Ahead they stayed, winning with a score of 16-6. The team improved to 2-0 for the season, the first time in seven years. Haggerty led the team scoring six goals, junior Katy Miller scored three times and had an assist, Horeth and Masterton each completed one goal and two assists, and goalkeeper sophomore Maeve McGoff made 10 saves. In their most recent game, versus Notre Dame College (OH), the Lakers then shutout an opponent for an entire half for the first time since 2004 and finished with a 9-3 win. The team is now ranked 10th in the nation, tied with Pfeiffer University, and many players are promising to have great seasons. Haggerty had been named to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List and has scored 16 goals already, and McGoff is allowing just 4.67 goals per game and making 58 percent of her save opportunities. So far the season is looking glorious for the team who play their next game, away, against Georgian Court University on Saturday. They won’t play their first home game until March 22, against Queens University (NC).
