AD Barnett says 'Hurst branding will go green

Mercyhurst College Athletic Director Craig Barnett announced the "branding" of Mercyhurst athletics to require all teams to wear the same colors voted upon by all athletic teams (players and coaches), hall of fame members, Sisters of Mercy and some historians at a earlier meeting this year.

After gathering feedback from all of these sources Mercyhurst athletics was proud to announce all athletics teams would be predominately green (forest) and white with blue (navy) trim.

According to Barnett, Mercyhurst athletics were green and white until male students and sports were added in early 1970 and at that time blue was added for male sports and the women’s teams wore the traditional green and white.

One of the major issues Mercyhurst athletics faced was there were various colors used by the 25 different athletic programs. Some colors include kelly green, royal blue, forest green and
navy blue among others.

"With the new color change I believe all of our athletic programs will become more united and the school as a whole can rally behind our sports teams," said women’s hockey junior Nicole Nelson.

Barnett knew a change was needed when he first arrived at Mercyhurst and attended a baseball game against Grand Valley State University (GVSU). During the game, a group of football players came to cheer on their fellow Lakers wearing their forest green uniforms, while the baseball team wore royal blue. A GVSU parent asked which school the football players attended. The parent became confused when someone answered that they went to Mercyhurst.

"If we lined up one of our student-athletes from each of our 25 teams in a line, it will look like there are many different schools represented," said Barnett.

When asked what teams may need to make color changes only two teams came to mind for Barnett, baseball and men’s basketball, both of which wear predominately royal blue. However almost all of the 25 athletic team uniforms differ from each other, which causes confusion for many spectators.

"It’s astonishing when you go to the different sporting events and you find it hard to believe that these teams are competing for the same school as my team. Having unified colors will make it easier to support fellow athletic teams," said senior football player Zac Wild.

Teams such as women’s basketball have already made the switch to the new "branding" of color. This fall women’s basketball ordered new uniforms which were blue and white. However they changed their order after the result of the new "branding."

With the "branding" of color Barnett hopes in the future it will create a sense of pride, ownership and success.

"I am a big believer in image. Image is very important and after our ‘branding’ process it became evident that we all supported the same thing which parallels our history and tradition," he said.
