'Hurst rowing off to fast start

The Mercyhurst College men's and women's rowing teams sure left their mark in Camden, N.J. during the Knecht Cup Regatta this past weekend.

Saturday's races led three 'Hurst crews to the finals on Sunday; a solid start to the season after only two weeks of water time and a home race that was foiled by poor conditions.

On Saturday the lightweight men's four cruised into first place with a time of 6:50.1 for the top spot of 17 boats, beating second-place Fairfield by nine seconds in their heat.

The men's varsity four also finished strong with a time of 7:08.3, beaten only by Philadelphia's boat that clocked in at 6:56.9.

The Mercyhurst women's club eight fought hard and took the first place honor in their heat as well at 7:14.7, just three seconds ahead of the Philadelphia crew.

The men's varsity eight and women's club four also competed on Saturday, earning fifth and fourth places, respectively. The top two finishers from each heat continued to the finals.

Sunday began bright and early at 7 a.m., but the Laker crews only improved from the day before. The lightweight men's four kept their favored position and won the final at 6:53.5, edging out Fairfield by over five seconds. Entering the race as an underdog, the men's varsity four dropped nine seconds from the day before to win Sunday's final with a fierce 6:59 flat.

With no preliminary on Saturday, the men's lightweight eight raced a straight final Sunday and finished with a solid second place.

As the only women's crew to compete on Sunday, the club eight dropped nearly 10 seconds to 7:05.0 from their first heat to take a respectable third-place finish in the final. The Lakers biggest competitor, Dowling College, took only 6:52.7 down the course, but the women hope to thwart Dowling's chances of an NCAA bid in future competition.

Sophomore Alicia Peterson considers the women's team a "big contender for the eastern region."

She continued to say that "Every girl is willing to do whatever is necessary to get faster. Philadelphia is another team we're up against this year, and we race them again in two weeks.

"The women's eight is already a threat to Philadelphia, whose coach expressed concern about how much faster our women will be when they face each other again," Peterson said.

Both teams have their work cut out for them, but the mood is as optimistic as ever.

The women will host Eastern Michigan at home on Findlay Lake on Saturday, but the men have off until both teams travel to Athens, Ohio for the MACRA Regatta on Saturday, May 3.
