Parkhurst makes over Laker Inn

Walk into the Herrmann Student Union, and the main level looks the same as it did when classes let out for the summer.

Walk down the stairs, however, and it is a completely different story.

Mercyhurst College’s Laker Inn received a makeover while everyone was home enjoying their summers.

Instead of seeing the Sub Connection and the Galley, students now see the East Street Deli, the Cantina de Lakers and the Sequoia Grill.

A Starbucks coffee center is another one of the additions to the Laker Inn.
The walls in the Laker Inn are now brightly painted, and more seating is available for students who do not want to take their food to go.

Instead of a checkout area at each dining option, there is now only one checkout area.

“The food at the Union is so much better than last year,” sophomore Liz Zurasky said. “Not only does it have better quality, but it also seems more health-conscious.”

The East Street Deli is similar to last year’s Sub Connection, but it offers a wider variety of subs, wraps and combination deals.

The class of 2008’s Senior Gift, Cantina de Lakers, offers Mexican-style food including burritos, fajitas, quesadillas and burrito bowls.

The Sequoia Grill is all-encompassing. It serves everything from breakfast sandwiches to burgers and pizza.

One disadvantage of the renovations is the removal of the use of board plans. Students must pay with their One Card, dining dollars, debit card or cash.

“Although this is much, much better than last year, the combination of no board at the Union and Egan’s unlimited access will keep me eating at Egan,” junior Matt Monter said.

The East Street Deli and the Cantina de Lakers are open every day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the Sequoia Grill is open every day from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Go to the Laker Inn to check out the renovations and additions, and leave comments in the box located at the check-out area.
