There is a new dance group soon to grace the stage of Mercyhurst College’s Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center, and it will not just be bringing more of the same tutus and tiaras.

Noted as “one of America’s most surprising talents” by The New York Times, the Trey McIntyre Project takes a modern and cutting-edge approach to contemporary ballet that is sure to exhilarate audiences throughout its national tour.

The Trey McIntyre Project will be performing in the PAC Friday, Sept. 18th at 8 p.m. Tickets are only $15 for Mercyhurst students with ID, a startlingly low price compared to what one might pay for the same sort of show in New York or another arts’ hub.

Trey McIntyre, who established and continues to operate the Trey McIntyre Project, is a highly sought-after choreographer originally from Wichita, Kan.

He has created works for acclaimed companies such as Houston Ballet, New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. He was also the recipient of the prestigious Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography, among other accolades.

The Trey McIntyre Project, which is based in Boise, Idaho, first came into existence as a summer touring company in 2005. The work of this small troupe was well-received by its audiences as well as by critics, being applauded for its “fresh and forward-thinking choreography” by The Washington Post.

Spurred on by great success in summer touring, the Trey McIntyre Project became a full-time company in 2008. Now commencing with a second year as a year-round company, the Trey McIntyre Project is fresh with an ambitious touring schedule and plenty of physically impressive and emotionally electric performances to offer audiences.
Many Mercyhurst students, especially dance majors, are extremely eager to attend the approaching performance.

Junior Sarah Hricko said, “I am very excited for the Trey McIntyre Project to come to the PAC because it is a great opportunity in Erie to see professional dancing, especially within a contemporary vein.”

“This is a good opportunity to see a great dance company from out West that people here on the East coast might not see otherwise,” said sophomore Rachel Torgesen.

Junior Caitlin Burke could barely contain her excitement when asked about the upcoming show. “I am super pumped!” she said.

With such a great degree of student interest for the show already, the Trey McIntyre Project performance might sell out quickly.
