The annual recognized student clubs and organizations fair — now named the Experiential Learning Fair — will take place Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Herrmann Student Union.

Each year about 75 percent of the 85 recognized student clubs and organizations (RSCOs) on campus participate in the fair. This year, the fair will include them, service organizations, internships, study abroad opportunities and faculty-directed research.

The Experiential Learning Fair is not just a place to showcase clubs to other students. It is a place for networking with other clubs and the local organizations.

“Think of the powerful connections that can be made between a science or art club and an afterschool program that wants science and art enrichment opportunities for the children,” Colin Hurley, service learning director, said. “Imagine the possible combinations and potential experiences to be had outside the classroom.”

The name change for this fair was inspired by the development of the Center for Experiential Learning, which consists of the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership Development, Service Learning and the Career Development Center.

The center’s mission is to “enrich student learning by engaging in community-based experiences to integrate academic knowledge, leadership experiences, professional development and active citizenship,” said Sarah Allen, director of the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership Development.

Allen explained why the Department of Experiential Learning was created.

“The Department of Experiential Learning was established to coordinate and offer students the opportunity to learn, serve, experience and engage beyond the classroom,” she said. “These activities take shape in the form of participation in recognized student clubs and organizations, leadership development, service learning, career exploration and internships.”

Dr. Kyle Foust, executive director of Experiential Learning; Hurley, service learning director; Kristy Jamison, career development counselor; and Allen are all part of the Center for Experiential Learning and are coordinating this year’s fair.
