Campana’s Game Winner Brings Men’s Soccer to Victory

Men’s soccer was able to squeeze by Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania with the help of junior Fernando Martinez and sophomore Matt Campana who each scored a goal to win, 2-1.

The pair worked well with one another, as Fernando had the first goal plus an assist on Campana’s game-winner. The Lakers scored these two goals all within the first 15 minutes of the match.

“Fernando is a great player and has been scoring goals and creating chances for us all year. I have just been trying to get myself into scoring positions and Fernando has done well to find me when I step up,” Campana said.

The men helped themselves by scoring early on with two strikes past Bloomsburg’s goaltender Bernie Roell back-to-back. This was able to give them a little bit of a cushion even after the Huskies scored in the 23rd minute to cut the Lakers’ lead to just one.

Campana agrees that coming out strong from the start is important. “This season our team has done a really good job at pressuring teams and creating opportunities early on in games.”

“I think we have played well this season but I think we struggled to play at a consistent level early on in the season,” he added. Mercyhurst began the year with a slow start but most recently has kept it more positive and improved their current record to 9-3. They have also earned six wins in the last 7 games.

“As a team we have done a better job at staying focused and things are coming together at the right time for us, hopefully we can continue to play well as we get closer to the end of the season.”
