This week, the D’Angelo Department of Music celebrated music written by relatives.

The concert “Two Brothers, Two Masses” was held on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church.

The Concert Choir, the Carpe Diem Chorale and a chamber ensemble of instruments performed pieces by Joseph and Johann Michael Haydn.

Junior Mitchell Alpaugh is a member of the Concert Choir. “The choir worked very hard for (the) concert,” he said, noting that since “this is the first and only time our audience is going to hear it, we have to make it our best.”

First, the choir started off by singing “Ubi Caritas” by Maurice Durufle.

They sang from the back of the church, which gave a very interesting effect to the audience.

Then the choir processed down the aisle singing a hymn titled “The Day, Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended,” which was also written by Durufle.

The Carpe Diem Chorale then performed “Gloria” from “Mass in B Flat” by Antonio Lotti, accompanied by junior Jonathan Estrada on the cello.

They then performed “Missa Sancti Leopoldi” by Johann Michael Haydn.

This selection featured junior soloists Lauren Haines, soprano; Randi Heitman, mezzo-soprano and Alicia Danenberg, alto.

Next, the Concert Choir performed a mass by Joseph Haydn titled “Kleine Orgelsolomesse Nr. 7.” Andrea Baker, a senior Vocal Performance major, sang the solo movement “Benedictus.”

The concert closed with the choir singing “Achieved is the Glorious Work” from “The Creation” by Joseph Haydn.

Sophomore Elizabeth Zurasky said it was a very “grand piece for the audience to leave with, and it really exhibited the choir’s skills as musicians.”
