Mercyhurst College men’s soccer doesn’t boast about their near-perfect record so far this season.

“We are under no illusion that although we are off to a good start this season, we have a sense that we have accomplished nothing as of yet,” head coach Keith Cammidge said.

The team is 6-1 for the season, winning six straight and remaining undefeated at home. Watching the games and reading the stats, it comes as no surprise that the guys are working hard, and leaves little doubt that it is paying off.

The Lakers have held their last three opponents off the score sheet, and have posted an unbelievable 277:14 minutes of shut-out soccer. The last time the team posted three or more consecutive shut-outs was during a six-game streak in September 2006.

This past Thursday the team took on the University of the District of Columbia, where the Firebirds saw no chance of victory.

The Lakers dominated on the field by scoring four first-half goals and winning the match 4-0. Scoring twice for the Lakers was graduate student Paul Neill, while senior Nicholas Thompson and freshman Austin Solomon each knocked in one.

“Another encouraging team performance and another clean slate,” Cammidge said. “There are several strong challenges on the road the next couple of weeks that should give us more of an indication of where we stand.”

Even though the Lakers are dominating thus far, they don’t want to get ahead of themselves.

A 6-1 record doesn’t mean that it’s all smooth sailing from here on out. In fact, quite the opposite is true: The guys will have to work twice as hard in order to maintain their wining standing.

“There will be no bigger challenge than Tuesday’s away game at Slippery Rock University, a team we lost to 2-1 twice last year,” said Cammidge.

The Lakers are staying focused, working hard and playing as though the statistics are irrelevant, perhaps leading an example to other Mercyhurst teams.

Nonetheless, stats don’t lie.
