Things are going to be heating up on Groundhog’s Day with this year’s annual “Phil Up Your Bowl” Chili Cook-Off.
Seventeen entrants are sharpening their culinary skills and preparing their dishes for the competition this Thursday.

This is the cookoff’s sixth year, and is organized by the Human Resources and Campus Ministry departments.

“The event started in 2006 and was organized by Jim Tometsko after he came on board as the Human Resource Director with the help and organization of the Campus Ministry,” Administrative Assistant of Human Resources Michele Bille said.

The three genres of chili being served are hot & spicy, vegetarian and a unique ingredient.

Junior Erin Knepper said, “Bringing people together with food for a good cause is a win-win if you ask me.”
Sophomore Alejandra Zeron added, “That is a great idea, more people ought to know about it.”

Awards go to best in each category, but everyone is competing for the coveted “Best Chili on the Hill” trophy.
Trophies are awarded and the competitive spirit is high, but the true goal lies beyond that.

“The chili cook off was started as a way to bring employees together in camaraderie and at the same time raise money for the Mercy Center for Women,” Bille said.

The event is open to everyone on campus.

Samples are available for 25 cents, or a non-perishable food item will buy you three samples. All proceeds and food donations go to the Mercy Center for Women.

“This seems like an awesome way to enjoy good food and help someone out while you’re doing it,” senior Michael Troutman said.

Bille added lastly, “Everyone is encouraged to come and enjoy great chili and have a great time hanging out.”

The chili cook-off will be Thursday, Feb. 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Carolyn Herrmann Student Union.
