If the Lakers have conquered both bald eagles and huskies this week, what does next week hold?

On Tuesday, Oct. 6, the Mercyhurst College men’s soccer team claimed a road victory at Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania.

“We knew going into Tuesday’s match that it would be a tough fixture. However, the team was well prepared and totally focused on getting our first win away on the road,” graduate student Paul Neill said.

At the start of the game, Lock Haven got off to an early lead with a goal within the first 15 minutes.

At the end of the half, junior Arash Fahndezh found junior Billy Colton to put the Lakers on the board. With the game in a 1-1 tie shortly after half-time, the Lakers wasted no time in taking the lead.

Senior David Miller knocked one in to put the Lakers in front, 2-1.

The Laker’s tough defense held off the Eagles, not allowing any shots on the goal in the second half.

“We stuck to our game plan and showed great character and discipline,” Neill said.

This mentality allowed for the 2-1 win for the Lakers. The game marked the Lakers’ first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West road match win.

Looking to carry on the momentum, the team took on the Bloomsburg University Huskies Saturday, Oct. 10, at home. The men scored an unbelievable four goals within a 10-minute span in the first half.

Colton scored two, while Neill and sophomore Eric Steinmetz each added one apiece.

Mercyhurst outshot Bloomsburg in the game, 19-15.

Mercyhurst keepers’ freshman Diego Gustin and junior Ryan Wagner each recorded three saves, splitting the game evenly.

With both wins, Mercyhurst improves their overall record to 10-3.

“Morale is high throughout the squad and there is a real belief that we can continue our good form and go on to win our conference,” Neill said.

The Lakers travel to California University (Pa.) on Wednesday, Oct. 14, with hopes to make steps closer to their goal.
