Sports unite fans

As I’m sitting here writing this article, I’m doing one of my favorite things: watching the Steelers. I’m sure there are many other people who are watching their teams play on Sunday afternoons, but I, of course, feel like my team is the best.

And it’s not because of the players and how well they play, though I must say that we are amazing. Rather, it’s because of the pride that everyone in Pittsburgh has for their teams, including the Penguins and Pirates.

I literally get goosebumps when I watch those specials about past Steeler or Penguin teams, and I know I’m not the only one.

To show you how loyal Pittsburgh fans are, I’ll tell you a story. Once, when I was younger, my family and I were driving home during a Steelers game. When we got into the Pittsburgh area, it was almost eerie how empty the highway was – there was one car in front of us and literally no others.

Obviously, we were listening to Myron Cope commentating the game on the radio. Suddenly, Myron got excited and screamed “STEELER TOUCHDOWN!” As soon as we heard that declaration on the radio, the driver of the car in front of us stuck a terrible towel out of the window and waved it in victory.

My family and I laughed – only in Pittsburgh would everyone stay in to watch the game at home except for two cars who were listening to it on the radio.

I know this article seems a little biased towards Pittsburgh – OK, maybe it’s really biased – but that’s probably because I’m from there. But the point of me writing this wasn’t to show how awesome Pittsburgh is, although I would be lying if I said it wasn’t.

I just wanted to make a point of how amazing it is to have pride in your city, namely through sports. So, I’ll put aside my hatred of all the other teams and say one thing: it’s amazing to be part of something bigger than yourself. The greatest thing about sports is that they bring people together.

Whether you’re a Cowboys fan, a Bengals fan, or a Steelers fan, sit down in front of the TV on Sunday afternoon with your friends and family, and watch your favorite team play.
