Congratulations are due to all women in the U.S., I am told, as we have learned that the military is lifting its restrictions on women in combat.

This is supposed to be a great blow for equality for women and I am told that equality is good.

However, this whole episode reveals the total lack of perspective many people have.

While some people are excited that there is now going to be “equality” in the military, it seems that they have perhaps not thought through what this means.

Within the same day that this announcement was made there were calls for the selective service, also known as the draft, to apply to women as well.

Currently when you turn 18 and you are a male, you are required under threat of fines and imprisonment to register for selective service.

Women are not required to do this and are not allowed to.

However, now that women are allowed to serve in combat it does not seem like there is any reason at all why women should not be required to sign up as well.

It would be hypocritical for those who pushed for women to be allowed into combat to not also be in favor of requiring women to sign up for the draft.

After all, if men can be forced against their will to join the military and kill, why should women not be forced to as well?

In a push for the much vaunted, yet ill-defined, value of “gender equality” people have now opened what is in my opinion Pandora’s box.

The great scourge of the draft is now lingering above the heads of women all over the nation.

The draft is clearly unconstitutional and yet this great malodorous curse, rather than being reduced now has the potential to entrap millions of more people.

Section 1 of the 12th Amendment to the United States Constitution clearly states that: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction”.

Now for some reason it seems that the great judicial minds of the past and present in the typical judicial fashion have for some reason or another befuddled this very simple issue. I shall attempt to show the exceedingly simple reasons why the draft is unconstitutional and rather than expanding it to include women it should be eliminated altogether.

If someone chooses to join the military of their own free will it is called volunteering to join the service. One could call it voluntary servitude. If you are drafted to join the military you are not doing so voluntarily. You are being forced to involuntarily join the service. One could call it involuntary servitude. I do not really think it can be any simpler. Yet here we are thinking about expanding it.

Even without thinking about the draft, it seems clear that those who are excited about this new development and view it positively are not thinking.

The news reports that women can now serve in combat. But what does that even mean?

To use Mark Twain’s words from The War Prayer that means that now women can “tear their (the enemy’s) soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells”. Women can now “cover their (the enemy’s) smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead.” Women now can “drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their (the enemy’s) wounded, writhing in pain.” Women are now able to “lay waste their (the enemy’s) humble homes with a hurricane of fire.”

Women are now just like men able to “wring the hearts of their (the enemy’s) unoffending widows with unavailing grief” and “to turn them out roofless with their little children to wander unfriended in the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames in summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail.”

These are the things women are now able to do. These are the atrocities that the Pentagon pen pushers have now cleared women to engage in.

How far will those in favor of this much vaunted “equality” of which I hear so much about go? War is a plague and those who found themselves celebrating the ability for more people to engage in this scourge really need to reexamine their beliefs.
